GE ice machines
Plain-GE ice means two machines: the UCC15 clear-ice undercounter - a serious little refrigeration plant with a recirculating water system - and the ice makers built into GE refrigerators. Neither publishes fault codes, and GE's own troubleshooting is maintenance-first: the condenser and the water path before anything else.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.

Door and freezer-section makers inside GE refrigerators - diagnosed through the fridge.
The Opal countertop nugget maker belongs to GE Profile - a separate brand, covered separately.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Power, water supply and the harvest cycle - walked in order before refrigeration verdicts.
Water filter age and reservoir hygiene - solved with GE's own cleaning procedure.
Harvest and bin-level sensing - the honest undercounter split.
Drain type matters: gravity installs and pump-drain machines fail differently.
San Diego hard water versus the descale schedule - maintenance that pays for itself.
Fill line, valve and arm position - the classic post-move trio.
Series and model numbers
Undercounter machines are standalone refrigeration appliances; built-in makers are refrigerator subsystems - two different plates, two different parts books, one visit either way.
Model label
On UCC15/UNC15 undercounters the rating plate is behind the kickplate or front service panel - the same panel GE's cleaning procedure opens. For built-in makers, use the refrigerator's plate inside the fresh-food section. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
GE diagnostics
Verified: neither the UCC15/UNC15 undercounters nor GE's built-in refrigerator makers publish fault codes - GE's official material is cleaning and troubleshooting procedure, and this page follows it rather than inventing a table. The Profile-branded Opal is covered under its own brand.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for GE ice machines. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: production rate, water flow, harvest behavior, drainage, controls, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Alpha Pro serves ice makers across La Jolla - the Village, La Jolla Shores, Bird Rock, Muirlands and the Torrey Pines corridor, plus UC San Diego campus housing. Coastal air, condo logistics and hard county water all shape how ice makers age here.
Clear-ice machines in entertaining kitchens, bar builds and outdoor installations make La Jolla one of our busiest ice-maker areas. County hard water scales fill valves and clouds cubes everywhere, and machines near open air weather faster on the coast. The water path is traced before the machine itself is blamed - in this area that is where most faults live.
Undercounter clear-ice makers are common in La Jolla entertaining kitchens and bars; they have their own water-path and harvest diagnostics.
Scale narrows fill valves and clouds cubes; the water path is checked before the ice maker itself is blamed.
Machines near open air weather faster - corrosion and ventilation are part of the evaluation.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · La Jolla
An ice maker that sits for weeks has two problems. The water left in its lines and reservoir goes stale, and the inlet valve, closed the whole time behind a pressurized line, can start to weep. La Jolla has plenty of homes that sit empty for stretches, plus condos with tight kitchens, and the city water that feeds them averages roughly 14 grains per gallon. We deal with the leaks, freeze-ups and slow production, and help you set up the ice maker so it survives time away.
La Jolla gets its water from the City of San Diego, whose 2025 report shows 237 to 243 mg/L across its three treatment plants, all very hard. In a GE refrigerator, those minerals collect on the inlet valve's seat. A valve that doesn't seal fully can drip. The drip may freeze in the fill tube or run down the back of the cabinet, and a leak at the refrigerator can go unseen for weeks in a home nobody is living in. City rules cap whole-home short-term rentals, but second homes and seasonal stays still leave kitchens idle between visits. Countertop GE Profile Opal nugget machines add a space problem. GE requires three inches of clearance at the back and sides. In a compact beach-cottage kitchen or a condo corner, that space gets filled, the machine can't shed heat, and ice comes out slushy. Marine-layer humidity doesn't reduce ice output much, but damp air on metal fittings near the ocean can corrode supply connections over time.
Symptom: No ice with a cold freezer, an icicle at the tube, and sometimes a damp spot behind or under the refrigerator. Cause: Scale keeps the valve from closing tightly, and the drip freezes in the tube. Fix: We thaw the tube, test the valve and replace it, then check the supply line and fittings for leaks.
Symptom: Off-tasting or cloudy ice after you come back, or a film in the Opal reservoir. Cause: Water left standing while the home was empty. Fix: Sanitize and descale, discard the first batches, and drain and dry the machine before the next trip.
Symptom: Slushy nuggets, warm air from the vents, frequent defrosting and a Bin Full light with the bin nearly empty. Cause: Less than three inches of clearance at the back or sides, or the side tank blocking the vents. Fix: Move the machine to restore clearance and pull the side tank forward. If it still won't make good ice, contact GE's Opal support about the warranty.
Symptom: The machine is on but nothing comes out. Cause: Ice bridging in the chute, often after a period without use. Fix: On Opal Dispense models, hold Power and the Dispense button to reverse the auger. On others, switch off and let the ice melt.
Before you leave for more than a week or two, turn the refrigerator ice maker off and close the supply valve to it, and empty the bucket. Drain and dry the Opal completely. When you come back, run a descale, then throw out the first few batches of ice. In regular use, city water puts you in GE's over-10 gpg band, so descale the Opal every two to three weeks and replace the refrigerator filter at least every six months.
Parking in the Village is time-limited and enforced, and streets near the Shores and Windansea have few spaces, so please tell us about a driveway, garage spot or building guest space. For condos, reserve the service elevator if the building requires it. If you're away, a property manager or neighbor can let us in, and we'll call you with findings. Send the model number, and a photo of the fill tube area or any leak spot if you can. We'll test the valve, pressure, tube and module.
A leaking inlet valve is a straightforward repair, and it's worth doing quickly: water under a refrigerator can damage floors while no one's home. An ice maker module is also a modest part. For the countertop Opal, GE handles hardware faults under its one-year warranty by replacement or refund, and most problems are cleaning or clearance. We'll tell you which you have. The $99 diagnostic is credited to any repair.

Yes - same-day windows are offered across San Diego County subject to the day's schedule. Availability is confirmed for the exact address when you book.
We take requests across La Jolla - ZIP 92037, plus UC San Diego campus housing (92092, 92093). Share gate codes, elevators, parking or HOA rules when booking so the technician can plan the visit.
Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
No - the UCC15/UNC15 platform signals through behavior, and GE's official troubleshooting is condition-based. Diagnosis is direct: condenser, water path, harvest, sealed system.
The water path is talking: scale on the plate, weak pump flow or low supply. GE's cleaning procedure comes first - most cloudy-ice calls end there.
The Opal is a GE Profile product - a separate brand we service under its own page. This page covers plain-GE undercounters and built-in makers.
GE's own schedule says every 6 to 12 months - more often with pets or a dusty garage. A starved condenser mimics expensive refrigeration failures.
Behind the kickplate or front service panel on undercounters; on the refrigerator's interior plate for built-in makers.
Yes, for any absence of more than a week or two. Switch the ice maker off, close its water supply valve and empty the bucket. That stops a scaled valve from dripping while you're gone, and fresh water refills the system when you return. Drain and dry countertop Opal units.
Often, yes. A weeping inlet valve, a loose supply fitting or a frozen fill tube that overflows can all leave water behind the refrigerator. A clogged defrost drain can too. Shut off the supply valve, dry the area and call us so we can find the source.
Somewhere with at least three inches of open space at the back and sides, away from the stove and out of direct sun. Crowding the vents is the most common cause of slushy nugget ice. If you use the side tank, pull it forward so it doesn't block airflow.
Water that sat in the lines, bucket or Opal reservoir has gone stale. Discard the stored ice, run fresh water through, descale or sanitize the countertop unit and throw out the first few batches. If the taste stays, replace the refrigerator water filter.
