Almost every tap in San Diego County delivers hard to very hard water, from about 9 to 16 grains per gallon depending on the district. That shapes which parts wear out first. Hardness by Utility, from South Bay to North County
The San Diego County Water Authority wholesales water to 22 local agencies, and hardness at the tap depends on your agency. The 2025 reports list the City of San Diego at 237 to 243 mg/L depending on the plant, Helix at 206 mg/L, Otay's system at 9.4 grains per gallon, Sweetwater at 193 mg/L and Cal Am Coronado at 236 mg/L. C1, C2, C3, C5, FTD or F56 drain codes
Symptom: Standing water or a stopped cycle. Cause: C1 means pump-out took more than 2 minutes. C2 means total pump-out topped 7 minutes. C3 means no drain. C5 means pump-out was too short. FTD means failure to drain. Likely causes are a clogged filter or sump, a kinked hose, the air gap or the pump. Fix: We clear the drain path and test or replace the pump.
C4 float and refill fault
Symptom: C4 after a power failure, sometimes with a high water level. Cause: The dishwasher filled twice after the outage. The float switch may be stuck or failed, or the drain or sump may be clogged. Fix: We free or replace the float switch and clean the sump.
C6, C7 and C8
Symptom: Cool or cloudy results, or detergent left in the cup. Cause: C6 means the water is too cool. C7 means a fault in the temperature sensor circuit. C8 means the detergent cup was blocked from opening. Scale is a common factor behind C6 in San Diego water. Fix: We test the heater and sensor and repair the dispenser if it sticks with a clear load.
H2O, PrS and LEAK DETECTED
Symptom: Weak fill, a pressure warning or a leak shutdown. #H shows only a Delay Start countdown and isn't a fault. Cause: H2O means low or no fill. PrS is an invalid pressure-sensor signal. A leak alert means about 1.5 ounces of water in the base pan. Fix: We check the supply and valve, test the sensor and find the leak source.
