Cafe cooktops
Café cooktops wear the brass and copper knobs, but the service story is GE's: induction models flash documented letter pairs - E-o for overheating, E-c for a stuck keypad - and a flashing power level means the pan, not the cooktop. Gas and radiant Café tops stay largely mechanical, which keeps their diagnosis direct and their repairs honest.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.
30 and 36-inch touch-control induction with glide controls and kitchen timers.
Sealed-burner gas cooktops with the customizable knob hardware.
Smoothtop radiant models - element-and-switch machines at heart.
Brushed brass, copper, black and stainless knob kits - cosmetic, but part-number-relevant.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Cookware first - magnetic, flat, right-sized - then zone electronics.
Moisture and cap seating, then the spark module - dried and tested in order.
The E-o pattern - empty-pan heat or starved cooling air under the counter.
Element and switch continuity - a direct answer.
The E-c pattern - spills and standing water before any board is blamed.
Stop using the top; replacement is quoted honestly against the cooktop's value.
Series and model numbers
Induction speaks in documented flashes; gas and radiant speak through symptoms - knowing which dialect you own is half the booking.
Model label
The model and serial label is on the underside of the cooktop, reached from the cabinet below; gas models may also carry it under the burner box lip. Photograph the full label. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
Cafe diagnostics
The E-o and E-c meanings and the pan-detection behavior are documented in GE's official support material and owner literature. Longer 'Café cooktop code' lists online recycle other GE platforms and are excluded - anything unusual on the display is read against GE service data for the exact model.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for Cafe cooktops. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: ignition or zone behavior, controls, surfaces, installation, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Alpha Pro serves cooktops across La Jolla - the Village, La Jolla Shores, Bird Rock, Muirlands and the Torrey Pines corridor, plus UC San Diego campus housing. Coastal air, condo logistics and hard county water all shape how cooktops age here.
Recent La Jolla remodels favor induction, while established homes keep gas - often on kitchen islands with downdraft ventilation. Marine air and enthusiastic cleaning both find their way into burner bases, which is why the endless-clicking igniter is one of the most common cooktop calls in 92037. Zone electronics, cookware detection and moisture issues are separated before any part is named.
Recent La Jolla remodels favor induction. Zone electronics and cookware detection are tested with proper instruments.
Marine air and cleaning moisture cause the classic endless-clicking igniter; drying and evaluation come before part replacement.
Downdraft and island installations shape access and service - mention the setup when booking.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.

There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · La Jolla
A gas cooktop on a La Jolla cliff top breathes sea air every day. Salt and damp marine-layer mornings are hard on the smallest parts of a Café cooktop: the ceramic spark electrodes, the switch contacts behind each knob, and the wire terminals under the burner box. Induction models have a different weak spot in compact condo kitchens with little space for air. We repair Café gas, induction and radiant cooktops across La Jolla, from Bird Rock and Windansea to the Shores and Mount Soledad.
La Jolla sits on a headland with surf on three sides, and blocks closest to the water get the most salt spray. From May through August, May Gray and June Gloom keep the air cool and damp, often into the afternoon, and average coastal humidity runs about 63 to 75 percent. Salty moisture settles on a Café gas top between uses. Over time it corrodes electrode tips, pits brass burner heads and puts a film on the switch contacts. The first sign is often slow or weak ignition, or a single burner that clicks several times before lighting. Then the reverse happens. Santa Ana winds, about ten days a year, can drop humidity to single digits. Condo kitchens raise a separate concern. Towers built before the 1972 height limit, such as 939 Coast Blvd with 164 units from 1966, often have small galley kitchens where an induction cooktop sits over a narrow cabinet. Café induction boards need a fan and open air below to stay cool. Many La Jolla homes are second homes or seasonal rentals, so a cooktop can sit unused for weeks while salt builds up.
Symptom: The burner clicks many times before lighting, or lights only when you lean close with the knob held. Cause: Salt residue and corrosion on the electrode tip and terminal weaken the spark. Damp mornings make it worse. Fix: We clean or replace the electrodes and terminals, test the spark module, and check the ground path.
Symptom: The cooktop starts clicking on its own after sitting unused, or one knob sparks in the off position. Cause: Moisture and salt film inside the spark switch make contact without the knob being turned. Fix: We replace the affected switch or the full harness, since contacts on the others usually look the same.
Symptom: Zones stop mid-cook or show an F-code, and the fan runs loud. Cause: The generator board is overheating because the cabinet below has no ventilation path. Fix: We test and replace the board or fan and suggest ways to vent the cabinet within HOA rules.
Symptom: The flame is uneven around the ring, or lifts and blows out on low. Cause: Corroded ports and a misseated cap distort the flame. Low-flame settings may be off. Fix: We clean or replace burner heads and caps and reset the low-flame screw.
Near the ocean, the goal is to keep salt and moisture from sitting on metal. Wipe the burner heads and electrodes with a damp cloth after cooking and dry them with a towel. Before you leave for an extended trip, clean the caps and heads so salt doesn't build up for weeks. On induction models, the risk is heat, not salt, so keep the cabinet below open to airflow. Run each burner briefly once you return to find ignition problems before a dinner party does.
Parking takes planning in La Jolla. Village street parking is limited to between 30 minutes and 3 hours and is enforced, and the Shores fill up in summer. If you have a driveway, garage spot or guest pass, tell us when you book. For high-rise condos, reserve the service elevator and check whether the HOA requires a certificate of insurance. Have the model and serial number ready from the label under the cooktop, plus the symptom and any F-code. If you smell gas, leave the unit and call SDG&E first.
Salt-related failures usually involve small parts: electrodes, switches, burner heads. Fixing them costs much less than a new cooktop, and it avoids disturbing custom stone counters. The harder call is an induction board or a cracked top on an older unit. We'll give you a price for the part, and the $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair. In salt-air homes, cleaning after a repair is what keeps the next repair from coming soon.

Clear preparation makes a service request easier to evaluate.
Yes - same-day windows are offered across San Diego County subject to the day's schedule. Availability is confirmed for the exact address when you book.
We take requests across La Jolla - ZIP 92037, plus UC San Diego campus housing (92092, 92093). Share gate codes, elevators, parking or HOA rules when booking so the technician can plan the visit.
Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Officially: overheating of the element or electronics - often an empty pan on high, or blocked cooling air beneath the top. Let it cool 20-45 minutes and clear the air inlet; if it recurs under normal use, book the visit.
Pan detection: the cookware is not magnetic or is too small for the zone. Test with a magnet - if it grips the pan base firmly and the flash continues, the zone needs diagnosis.
No - they are mechanical with electric ignition. Diagnosis is direct: igniters, spark module, valves and caps.
On the underside of the cooktop from the cabinet below. GE parts need the full model including the suffix, so photograph the label.
Yes - the customizable hardware kits carry their own part numbers, and the model label makes ordering exact.
The marine layer is most persistent from May through August, keeping the air cool and damp near the coast. Moisture carrying salt settles on the electrodes and inside the switches, weakening the spark. Keeping the parts dry helps. If a burner takes more than a few clicks to light, the electrode or switch probably needs service.
We don't do cabinet construction, but during a repair we show you where air needs to enter and leave and what's blocking it. Often, removing a drawer back panel or clearing stored items is enough. Any cabinet changes in a high-rise should follow your HOA's rules and use its approved contractors.
Usually, yes. Look first: caps seated, no debris in the ports, no gas smell. Then light one burner at a time. If you smell gas at any point, turn everything off, leave the home and call SDG&E. Constant clicking or a weak flame after a long absence is a service call, not something to force.
Most igniter, switch and burner repairs are done from the top, with the grates and burner box removed. Induction boards and fans are sometimes reached from below through the cabinet. Glass tops sometimes require lifting the unit from the counter. We'll explain what's needed after diagnosis.
