Rancho Bernardo coverage
Rancho Bernardo's established homes and active-adult communities run appliances long and loyally - we see well-maintained 15-year-old units weekly, and parts strategy matters as much as diagnosis.
Inland heat and hard water set the pattern here: garage refrigerators work hardest in summer, dust clogs condensers, and scale builds in ice makers, dishwashers and washer valves.
Typical repair pricing
Estimated cooktop repair pricing for common work in standard installations. The exact scope and total are confirmed after diagnosis and before authorized repair work begins.
$99 residential diagnostic fee: non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost when you proceed. Parts, model, installation, access and the confirmed repair scope can change the final total.

This parent page helps route a standalone cooktop request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, fuel type, cutout or installation.
Describe which position is affected, the selected setting and what happens. A no-heat symptom alone does not establish the failed component.
Note the burner or zone, cookware used, selected level and whether the behavior changes. Do not continue testing a surface that overheats or will not shut off.
Note which control was selected and what you safely observed before stopping use. Never relight manually, clear ports with tools, adjust a valve or reproduce a gas or flame concern.
Photograph the visible condition without pressing, lifting or using the damaged area. Stop use if glass is cracked or live parts may be exposed.
Photograph the complete display and share the exact model. Do not include account passwords, remove knobs to access components, enter diagnostic modes or assume a code is universal.
Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the cooktop. Do not lift it from the counter or touch power, gas, ventilation or mounting connections.
San Diego installations
Surface and fuel type set the service path—identify yours from the model label, not the look of the surface.
Burners, igniters and spark modules. Clicking that will not stop is a common, diagnosable symptom—do not keep triggering it.
Elements and surface switches under a glass top. A cracked top is replaced as a part, quoted by exact model.
Sealed electronics drive the cost profile. Cookware compatibility issues can mimic faults—note the pan you used.
Safe owner checks
Leave the area immediately. From a safe location, call 911 or SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343. Do not use the cooktop, operate switches or return to demonstrate the concern.
Do not reproduce the problem. If there is fire, smoke, exposed live parts or any doubt, leave the home and call 911. Do not touch the surface, controls or nearby electrical/gas connections.
Models and maintenance
A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.
Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the cooktop, removing panels or reaching near wiring, gas or ventilation connections.
Follow the matching owner guide for approved surface, burner, grate and exterior care. Do not use a generic reset or unverified cleaning method as a diagnostic step.
Do not lift the cooktop from the counter, touch wiring, adjust a gas valve, alter ventilation or mounting connections. Share known access and installation details when scheduling.
Our Work
Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.
The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.
Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.
Display messages
No general cooktop error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.
For a complete range with an oven cavity, use the distinct range repair parent. For a separate built-in or wall oven, use the oven repair parent. Those pages are not duplicate targets for this standalone-cooktop identity.
Visit, pricing and warranty wording
The residential service visit / diagnostic fee is $99. It always applies, is non-refundable and is credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. No exceptions.
The commercial service visit / diagnostic fee is $150 and is separate from residential pricing.
After diagnosis, review the proposed scope and estimate before authorizing repair work.
Review current pricing information90-day labor warranty.
1-year parts warranty.
Both terms begin on the date the repair is completed.
An online request starts scheduling; it does not by itself confirm an appointment or a model-specific repair outcome.

Ash won't hurt the glass, but it is fine enough to pass through the cooling intake and settle on the fan and heat sink. That raises board temperature and leads to overheat shutdowns. If your cooktop started cutting out after a smoke event, cleaning the air path is the first thing we check.
It's possible, but induction needs a dedicated circuit sized for the unit, a matching cutout and open airflow below. Many original kitchens here were wired and cut for gas. We can check the space while servicing your current cooktop and list what would need to change.
We repair gas, radiant and induction cooktops across the usual range, from GE and Frigidaire to Bosch, Thermador and Wolf. As an independent shop, we work on most mainstream and high-end models installed in local kitchens, old and new.
Often not. Pans built from bonded layers can buzz on induction, and the cooling fan adds a steady whir. A problem sounds different: grinding, rattling or a fan that surges right before the zone shuts off. That points to a fan or board issue.
Local notes · Rancho Bernardo
Rancho Bernardo sits on the inland side of I-15, where Santa Ana winds arrive hot and dry several times a year between September and April. Those gusts push fine dust, and in fire years ash, into every kitchen opening. Two cooktop openings care: the tiny ports on a gas burner head and the cooling intake under an induction top. When either one clogs, you get lazy flames, clicking igniters or zones that quit mid-meal.
Santa Ana events hit this part of the county roughly ten days a year, and inland gusts can top 100 mph. The October 2007 Witch Creek Fire showed what that wind carries: it burned through The Trails, Montelena and Westwood with gusts measured at 112 mph. On a gas cooktop, wind-borne grit settles into burner ports and around the spark electrode, where a little moisture from wiping turns it into a paste that lets the spark jump to the burner base instead of lighting the gas. On induction, the problem hides under the counter. The power board is cooled by a small fan that pulls cabinet air across a heat sink; dust on those fins raises board temperature until the unit throws an overheat code. Most homes here date from 1970 to 1999, so the cutout, gas stub and electrical circuit were sized for the cooktops of that era. A newer unit dropped into an old opening may fit the glass but not the airflow or the amperage.
Symptom: Flame catches on one side first, lifts off the ports, or shows lazy yellow tips that leave soot on pans. Cause: Ports partly blocked by wind-blown dust, ash or boil-over residue, or a wrong orifice after a gas conversion. Fix: We clear the ports, check orifice sizing against the gas type and confirm flame shape before looking at the regulator.
Symptom: Sparking continues with the flame lit, or with every knob off. Cause: Water trapped in the burner base or a valve switch, a cap sitting crooked, poor outlet ground or polarity, or a spark module starting to fail. Fix: Dry and reseat, test the outlet, then isolate the shorted switch or electrode. The module is replaced only after the switches check out.
Symptom: The zone runs a few minutes, the fan roars, then power drops and an error flashes. Cause: Fine dust or pet hair packed on the cooling fan and heat sink, a cabinet air path blocked by storage, or a weakening IGBT power board. Fix: We clean the fan and fins, open the air path and load-test the board. Airflow fixes cost far less than a board, so we start there.
Symptom: A glass-top zone never glows, or glows full red at every knob setting. Cause: An open ribbon element, welded infinite switch contacts, a failed relay or a tripped limiter. Fix: Each part is ohm-tested and the failed one replaced. On older radiant tops these parts are usually still available.
After a Santa Ana stretch or any day with ash in the air, wipe the cooktop cold and dry before you cook. On gas tops, lift the caps and look at the ports; a toothpick clears most of them. Let every part dry fully before you light it, since trapped water is the usual cause of nonstop clicking. Wipe sugary spills off glass the same day. Under an induction unit, don't pack the drawer or cabinet below, because that space is the fan's air supply.
Most calls here are single-family homes with driveway parking, so access is simple. Tell us whether the top is gas, radiant or induction, and send a photo of the model label if you can find it; it is usually on the underside of the unit or on a card inside the cabinet below. Clear that cabinet before we arrive. For intermittent faults, note which zone quit and when. If you smell gas, leave the house and call SDG&E from outside before calling anyone else.
Switches, electrodes, spark modules and radiant elements are low-to-mid cost parts, so a gas or radiant top in good shape is normally worth repairing. Cooktops commonly last 15 to 18 years. Two failures change the math: cracked glass, which often means replacing the top with its elements, and an induction power board, which can approach the price of a new unit. In an older AVCO-era kitchen, also ask whether a new model even fits the existing cutout and circuit. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair.
